The Super Smash Bros. Prototype Receives Official Footage! [VIDEO]

After more than two decades, we can see how Super Smash Bros. started as a hugely successful franchise…

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has been active on YouTube lately, where he often talks about game design and even the history of the Kirby series he created. Sakurai knows his stuff, and sometimes he comes up with significant surprises. For example, Dragon King: The Fighting Game has popped up in his latest video. The name will be unfamiliar, so we’ll add that it was the original name of the Super Smash Bros. concept!

It’s nothing new that the game, which was eventually released for Nintendo 64, started life as Dragon King (prototypes were initially running under that name). Still, the best we’ve seen of the project are images from its early stages. However, Sakurai thought it was time to show it off in the video. After all, it was his idea, and the fact that it was Nintendo’s IP, he must have negotiated with the big N, who then agreed to show it off.

After the release of Kirby Super Star, Sakurai and his team turned their attention to the Nintendo 64, initially known as the Ultra 64, which, unlike the PlayStation, would remain on cartridges. It was the big N’s first proper attempt at 3D. Sakurai submitted two concepts to the Japanese company: a stealthy, exploration-driven, remote-controlled robot adventure game, the other a four-player brawler with no energy bar. The idea of the latter should be familiar…

Sakurai put together a prototype for both concepts but turned to Super Smash Bros. because his other plans fell through, and he needed to put something together quickly. Still, even the prototype included smash attacks, shields, dash moves, and air attacks in addition to the classic map building. And the best part: meanwhile, Sakurai explained his thought process for why Super Smash Bros. is the way it is…

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
