The Base PlayStation 5 Gets a New Upscaler: Introducing Quick Spectral Super Resolution! [VIDEO]

This upscaling feature uses artificial intelligence, so the “little brother” of the PlayStation 5 Pro has also been equipped with this technology.

The PlayStation 5 received Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) technology, a version of the PlayStation 5 Pro’s AI-based, resolution-enhancing solution, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), adapted for the base model. QSSR is built on a simplified neural network architecture with a hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on standard PlayStation 5 consoles. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Tsushima have already received updates featuring this technology, and you can watch videos of them below. QSSR will be available to all PlayStation developers in the future.

“PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses artificial intelligence to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches. Until now, its computational demands made bringing that experience to the base PlayStation 5 impossible. While PSSR remains the gold standard on the PlayStation 5 Pro, QSSR provides notable improvements in image detail and stability on the PlayStation 5,” said Daniel Craig, principal engineer of graphics research and development at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

“Our team at Insomniac works hard to ensure that each of our games showcases PlayStation hardware. We’re excited for Marvel’s Wolverine to be one of the first titles to offer players this new QSSR technology. QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, revealing extra details amid the bustling streets of Madripoor, the crowded alleyways of Shinjuku, and other areas throughout Logan’s epic journey. It’s the perfect complement to the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine and brings a taste of the PlayStation 5 Pro experience to PlayStation 5 players. I love seeing how the PlayStation tech teams continually improve the PlayStation 5 platform, and I’m excited for more games to use QSSR in the future,” said Insomniac Games’ head of technology, Mike Fitzgerald.

“At Sucker Punch, we’re excited to bring QSSR to Ghost of Tsushima players so they can experience the world we’ve created with more clarity and detail. QSSR excels at resolving fine details in our characters and environments, achieving a level of temporal stability not possible on the base PlayStation 5 until now. We’ve long wished that all PlayStation 5 players could experience the incredible image quality that QSSR brings to the PlayStation 5 Pro. QSSR is a positive step toward that goal,” said Sucker Punch Productions lead rendering engineer Jasmin Patry.

Sony isn’t neglecting the base model. It would have been nice if the company had done that.
