An RTX 4090 Founders Edition Heatsink Fell Off While Moving a PC!

TECH NEWS – We really get the feeling that we’re dealing with an extremely sensitive soul in the form of a female graphics card!

We have no idea how a GPU could shed its own heatsink, but anything seems possible. While it’s common for high-end Nvidia GeForce RTX GPUs to have their connectors melt, it’s not common for a GPU to break on its own. We believe all sorts of malfunctions have occurred with the RTX 4000 and 5000 series, but this is unique. On Reddit, u/Maker_753 reported that he noticed a piece of the heatsink had fallen off his GPU while he was moving his computer.

His system was equipped with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition, the flagship of the Ada Lovelace architecture, which was unable to hold the piece in place. As can be seen in the photos, a piece of the heatsink near the PCIe connector lost contact and fell off. This exposed the heat pipes and the solder joints where the heatsink was attached. This is the first time we have learned that the heatsink is assembled from several components. According to the report, the GPU was purchased in August 2023. The user tried to seek assistance from Nvidia but was refused because the 3-year warranty had expired.

The user tried to find similar cases, but he couldn’t find one that matched his situation. Now, stuck with a faulty GPU, he has two options: fix it himself or have a GPU repair specialist fix it. The latter option seems much more expensive; the user reports that technicians charge nearly $400 for the repair. He’s now considering reattaching the components with thermal epoxy. It appears that the solder joints cracked over the years due to thermal expansion and contraction.

Some users suggested reducing the voltage, while others recommended using thermal paste, spacers, and thermal epoxy to secure the components. Since the printed circuit board is undamaged, these solutions will ensure that the GPU functions nearly as well as before.

Grabbing controllers since the middle of the nineties. Mostly he has no idea what he does - and he loves Diablo III. (Not.)
