Of course, this still raises questions, especially when considering the two weakest current-generation consoles.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be the only game in the trilogy to launch simultaneously on all platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. While the multiplatform release announced in June sparked great enthusiasm, many soon began to worry about the game’s optimization across consoles, fearing that the least powerful platforms (the Xbox Series S and the Nintendo Switch 2) would compromise the graphical quality. However, these concerns appear to be unfounded. Director Naoki Hamaguchi and his team are doing everything they can to ensure the game runs smoothly on every system without any technical compromises.
“I’m very blessed to have the team I have, with incredible, truly talented engineers. I want to stress that players don’t need to worry about the multiplatform experience when it comes to development. The team is set up so that one segment focuses exclusively on gameplay elements while another team focuses exclusively on optimization. That’s the kind of setup we have internally. We’re always reading comments, and fans are always doubting and saying things like, ‘Oh, no, this will never work on low-spec hardware.’ There’s no way.” Seeing all this doubt is disappointing because, as we’ve explained many times in many interviews, we have separate teams dedicated to gameplay and optimization. Please just believe us!”, Hamaguchi told RPG Site during Tokyo Game Show.
It’s unclear whether this approach will lead to a seamless multi-platform release, but perhaps we should give Square Enix a chance. Besides, the release is still a long way off since Final Fantasy VII: Revelations is set to arrive on April 8. In half a year, they’ll have to deliver stable performance while maintaining decent visuals.
