TECH NEWS – The publisher’s multi-step REX plan aims to make AAA development faster and easier by evolving the engine around artificial intelligence.
Capcom has announced plans to evolve the RE Engine for the age of artificial intelligence and simplify game development. Rather than building a completely new technology, the company intends to upgrade its existing engine in gradual steps.
The multi-stage program is called REX. Its purpose is to improve efficiency, performance, tools, and accessibility while supporting Capcom’s new goal of “creating games together with AI.”
Executive programmer Satoshi Ishida outlined the plan during the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026 on October 2. The engine is expected to be unified around a more common programming language that is easier for both humans and AI systems to understand.
Artificial intelligence could eventually interpret and write program code, conduct playtests, and identify bugs. REX is also intended to improve performance, development tools, and quality assurance throughout production.
Capcom says modern AAA games have grown so large that even simple processes can consume considerable time, while large teams need an engine that remains accessible to everyone. AI could primarily accelerate repetitive and time-consuming work.
The publisher has previously opposed the use of AI-generated assets, so the initiative may focus more on streamlining workflows than on automatically producing game content.
