GAMING NEWS – Dan Houser’s studio is developing two new projects, including a story about a rogue artificial intelligence that comes to hate itself.
Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser is developing two new video games at his media company, Absurd Ventures. One is an open-world comedy scheduled to be revealed in the coming months, while the other is a dystopian sci-fi story centered on a sentient artificial intelligence.
The unusual premise sees the AI gain self-awareness after a video game project goes disastrously wrong. Houser says the system was created by two people who hated each other, with the result that the AI ends up hating itself as well.
“The other title is a dystopian sci-fi about a video game development gone very wrong, and about a rogue AI that discovered sentience,” Houser explained.
No release window has been shared for the AI-focused title. The open-world comedy, however, is expected to be shown within the next few months and will explore character memory alongside its comedic focus.
Houser left Rockstar in 2020, making Grand Theft Auto VI the first entry in the series developed without his involvement. Absurd Ventures nevertheless includes several former Rockstar veterans, such as Lazlow Jones and Michael Unsworth.
Both games therefore appear to be original projects rather than attempts to simply repeat GTA’s established formula. The self-loathing sentient AI in particular gives the sci-fi project an unusually distinctive hook.
