As for Rick Flag Jr.? Well, if you’ve seen The Suicide Squad, you know that Peacemaker (John Cena) killed him. But when asked if he would reprise his role as Flag in the upcoming second season of Peacemaker, Kinnaman had a rather sharp response, and not necessarily because his character is dead.

“I don’t know what to say. That’s ridiculous. I would never. I would never be on a show like that. It’s not what I do. It’s not what I do,” Kinnaman said in a recent interview with ScreenRant while promoting his film The Silent Hour.

The outlet offered no further context, but the reaction feels strange, possibly a jab at the show. And it’s not as though Kinnaman is above TV—he’s done plenty, starting his American career in The Killing, House of Cards, and currently starring in For All Mankind.

So, does Kinnaman have an issue with Peacemaker? That would be odd considering it’s a spin-off of The Suicide Squad, a film in which Kinnaman starred (as well as the 2016 Suicide Squad), and both share the same hard-R, irreverent, violent tone.

It’s an odd remark, unless it’s more of a deflection. Director Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist), who directed episodes of Peacemaker season two, along with Greg Mottola and James Gunn, tagged Kinnaman in a wrap post on Instagram that eagle-eyed fans noticed. The tag was quickly deleted, but perhaps Kinnaman’s Rick Flag appears in a flashback before his death, and the actor is merely deflecting? It’s hard to say, but it certainly makes us more curious. Additionally, Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. will appear in Peacemaker, so maybe that sheds some light. Perhaps it’s a father-son flashback? Who knows?

Among the surviving elements of the DCU, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) is one of the few characters remaining. Waller is set to star in her own show, according to Gunn, but no details have been released yet, and it hasn’t even started filming. DC Studios kicks off in December with Creature Commandos, followed by Superman in the summer of 2025, and presumably Peacemaker will arrive sometime next year, perhaps solving this little mystery.
