During the Steam Next Fest last October, PC gamers got their hands on a game that aimed to reimagine the Grand Theft Auto experience from a new angle. The Precinct, which puts players in the shoes of a police officer in a corrupt 1980s American city, became so popular that its demo ranked among the most downloaded products on Valve’s platform. Needless to say, anticipation for the open-world experience is high, but Fallen Tree Games has announced that more time is needed to polish the title.

Fallen Tree Games initially postponed The Precinct in July, hoping for a late 2024 launch. However, they recently updated fans with another shift in plans: “We have made the difficult decision to move the release of The Precinct to the first half of 2025,” the team shared in a Steam post. “We understand this may be disappointing news for our fans, and we are truly sorry for any inconvenience, but this decision was not made lightly. We’d like to explain why.”

“At Fallen Tree Games, we’re a small core team of just five people, so we don’t have the same resources as major AAA studios making similar sandbox games,” the statement continued. “We’ve been working tirelessly to polish the game and fix bugs, hoping to hit the 2024 mark. Unfortunately, even with all our efforts, we realize the game we could deliver this year isn’t the one you deserve.”

“Simply put, the version we’d release now wouldn’t meet our standards,” the post concluded.

The team expressed gratitude to everyone who supported The Precinct during the Steam Next Fest, noting that the positive reception had been “uplifting” and confirmed they were heading in the right direction. However, Fallen Tree Games hasn’t set a firm release date for 2025 and plans to share more once they are confident.
