Since its launch in 2000, the PlayStation 2 has established itself not only as a sales phenomenon but also as an icon of the gaming industry. After all, it is currently the best-selling gaming console in history, behind the Nintendo DS and the Switch. Few platforms have left such a deep mark as the PS2; a real watershed in the industry. However, in the last few hours, it has been in the news again, as Sony has updated its sales statistics.

Sony has launched a special website to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand.

This online space collects historical data, curiosities and results of each console generation, from the original PlayStation to the PS5, which has sold more than 65 million units. In this sense, the most striking thing is that the legendary PS2 has sold more than previously thought. The sales figure of 155 million has been maintained for many years.

At the same time, Sony mentioned that “PS2 is one of the biggest-selling video game consoles of all time, with over 160 million consoles sold worldwide since 2000.” Anyone who regularly reads gaming news will know that this is not entirely new, as Jim Ryan, former CEO of PlayStation, dropped this surprising fact in an episode of the official PlayStation podcast last March, before his retirement.

The website also highlights the combined sales of Sony’s other consoles. For example, the success of the first PlayStation with 102 million or the PS4 with 117 million. The least notable in this respect was the PS3 (87 million). This is hardware that has struggled to find an audience due to its complex development architecture and high starting price. PlayStation also boasts the PSP and PS Vita, handheld consoles that are beloved by fans. In this regard, Sony is rumoured to be working on a new handheld console, as Bloomberg recently reported.

Sales of PS2 and PlayStation consoles
