Digital Foundry also took an in-depth look at Gran Turismo 7 on PlayStation 5 Pro, revealing what the half-generation update brings to Polyphony Digital’s product. Full ray tracing in races and replays, use of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler, 8K resolution, and even stronger performance on PlayStation VR2. PSSR is only used when raytracing in the cockpit view, presumably because it’s quite system intensive. In most cases, either PSSR or the original TAA is used, with or without raytracing.

With PSSR, the native resolution of the image can be as low as 1080p, and this is upscaled to 4K. The result is good, but not fantastic. There is some noise from thin objects, and in some cases the image quality degrades due to a lot of artifacts (taillights with ray tracing on look very noisy). With TAA, there are no such artifacts, so this technology is capable of better results than Sony’s new upscaler.

But PSSR really shines in 8K graphics mode (we reported an example a few days ago in No Man’s Sky, and that game was in the news today for another result). It reconstructs the image from 4K to 8K, so we get a great result, proving that the higher the native resolution, the stronger the upscaling. Of course, you need a display capable of that resolution, and since that’s still very rare these days, it’s still a very young product category.

So the PlayStation 5 Pro, which has been out for three weeks now, is capable of some really positive results in many cases, but let’s not forget the negative examples (Silent Hill 2 Remake, Alan Wake II).
