“Honestly, it’s just not clear… I’m not working on it right now. And to be frank, I don’t really know what I’ll take on next. There are so many options ahead of me, but my priority right now is getting [Conclave] into theaters as soon as possible. I also need to complete [The Ballad of a Small Player], which will take me until next summer. Beyond that, it’s hard to predict. The Bourne franchise is incredible, though, and if there were ever a new angle, something untold, I’d love to take it on. But only if I felt I could make a film on par with what Paul Greengrass achieved. He created phenomenal movies, and that’s a very high bar to reach.”

Since earning an Academy Award for All Quiet on the Western Front, Berger has been in high demand, with his latest thriller, Conclave, generating Oscar buzz. For now, it appears his packed schedule leaves little room for a new Jason Bourne film, which would be a shame given his recent accomplishments.

While rumors and reports, along with Matt Damon’s own comments, suggest that Bourne 6 is in development, the situation remains murky. Adding to the confusion, Berger has stated he would be interested in directing the sequel, but only if a compelling reason emerges to revive the franchise.

“You really need a fresh purpose to bring it back—without that, there’s no point. It has to offer something new, a fresh perspective. That’s probably the only reason Matt Damon would return, too. He doesn’t need the money or the project. But if there’s a meaningful, personal journey for him as an actor, then that’s a challenge worth taking. If not, it’s better to leave it alone.”

Reports from October indicated that both Edward Berger and Matt Damon were attached to Bourne 6, with a tentative title of The Bourne Dilemma. However, this could merely be a working title while the studio pieces the project together.

Matt Damon first portrayed Jason Bourne in 2002’s The Bourne Identity, which revitalized the modern action genre. Its sequels, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, received widespread acclaim. Unfortunately, the most recent installment, 2016’s Jason Bourne, failed to live up to its predecessors. Bringing in a renowned director like Berger could offer the fresh perspective needed to breathe new life into the series.

Edward Berger Open to ‘Bourne’ Sequel—If the Story Justifies It
