Fresh sales estimates for handheld gaming PCs have surfaced, and it’s now clear that Steam Deck has left ROG Ally, Legion Go, and others trailing far behind.

Since its debut in 2022, the Steam Deck has spearheaded a major shift in the gaming industry: the rise of handheld PCs designed specifically for gaming. These devices promise the power of a traditional PC in a compact form factor, leading to releases like the ROG Ally and Legion Go. However, until now, one question remained unanswered: how do these devices compare in sales?

While much has been said about Steam Deck’s numbers, little attention has been given to its competition – the Asus ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and MSI Claw. According to a report by The Verge, citing figures from IDC, Valve’s Steam Deck has outsold its competitors by a landslide. In 2023 and 2024, it accounted for over 50% of all notebook PC sales, shipping more than 3.7 million units.

Meanwhile, the combined sales of its rivals haven’t even cracked the 2 million mark. While the handheld PC market is still in its infancy, projections suggest that by 2025, another 2 million units will be sold across Valve and other manufacturers. Even AMD was taken aback by these figures, with marketing chief Frank Azor calling the growth “astonishing” considering that handheld PCs didn’t even exist three years ago.

The trajectory for these devices is brighter than ever. Valve has repeatedly teased the arrival of Steam Deck 2, and while its launch remains some time away, the company has also set its sights on expanding SteamOS. The Linux-based operating system will soon be available to third-party manufacturers. In fact, the upcoming Lenovo Legion Go S will ship with SteamOS pre-installed, and Valve remains confident that SteamOS will not compete directly with Windows.
