Blizzard Entertainment is rolling out sweeping changes to Diablo IV alongside the launch of its eighth season. The studio believes that players are “progressing too fast” and has taken measures to slow down advancement. One of the most controversial adjustments relates to boss loot drops, with rewards being slashed by as much as 91.7%.

What prompted this decision? Last month, Blizzard co-founder and Diablo visionary David Brevik—clearly influenced by Path of Exile 2—remarked that modern ARPGs have become “soulless and overdone.” One of his main arguments was that excessive loot collection devalues even the rarest items, ultimately diminishing the overall enjoyment of the game. Blizzard appears to have taken this philosophy to heart.

With Season 8, the way players are rewarded for taking down world bosses is undergoing a drastic shift. Previously, each boss guaranteed six unique items from its own loot pool, but moving forward, that number will be reduced to five—with only two items coming directly from the boss’s loot table. The rest will be generic drops.

The situation is even worse for groups of four players. As pointed out by GameStar, under the old system, a team would receive 24 unique items; with the new adjustments, they will now only receive two. This massive 91.7% reduction in unique rewards has sparked controversy, particularly since the loot itself hasn’t changed—only the chances of acquiring these valuable pieces have been significantly reduced. “Anyone who thinks this is a good thing doesn’t realize how much of our time is being wasted,” lamented one frustrated player on the Blizzard forums.

Season 8 of Diablo 4 is set to launch on April 29, though players can test out some of these upcoming features on the PTR servers until March 18 and provide feedback to Blizzard.
