Aaryn Flynn<\/strong><\/em>, who was previously the general manager of BioWare, told something similar to PCGamesInsider<\/a><\/span>\u00a0at this year’s GDC, adding that the RPG<\/strong><\/em> genre is heading towards a fine state…<\/p>\n

Recently, we wrote about Flynn how he formed a new studio under Improbable, and they are working on an online RPG (NOT an MMO!), using the SpatialOS<\/strong><\/em> technology, made in-house. \u201eWe remain incredibly bullish about where RPG<\/strong><\/em>s can go and I think there\u2019s a surprising amount of opportunity there with SpatialOS<\/strong><\/em> and RPG<\/strong><\/em>s. Roleplaying as a genre, I feel, is due for a renaissance. So many folks have maybe softened the edges of roleplaying a bit too much. There are so many teams who are doing experiences, like Larian, and I look to them for inspiration. I\u2019m asking myself: \u2018How can you do that in a multiplayer situation? What kinds of things can you do there?\u2019. We talk about that a lot. At the end of the day, we just want a bunch of players to have some fun and to do something they haven\u2019t done before. From there comes the success and everything else you want in this industry,\u201d Flynn says.<\/p>\n

He explained how people can end up making a multiplayer RPG<\/strong><\/em> easier with the help of SpatialOS<\/strong><\/em>: \u201eWe\u2019ve often talked about this and said that our favourite RPG<\/strong><\/em>s are ones that really embrace empowerment \u2013 you can say what you want to say, go where you want to go, make the choices that you want to make and really get back to role-playing. That\u2019s fundamentally a question of empowerment. It\u2019s hard to role play if you can\u2019t choose or do anything. What can we do with SpatialOS<\/strong><\/em> that would get us back to role-playing, to really compelling experiences that allowed you to roleplay? That\u2019s become something of our laser focus as we think about these things.<\/p>\n

The scale is going to be a factor I think, but at the same time, I\u2019m not sure we\u2019re chasing numbers for the sake of numbers. That\u2019s a different kind of endeavour. I propose we flip that around; the best role-playing games have always offered intimacy and a certain amount of relationships, right? Can SpatialOS<\/strong><\/em> do that with a relatively small group of people? Yeah, I think it can and there are things that SpatialOS can help us build that help forge relationships between players in a deeper, more meaningful way. We don\u2019t have all the answers yet. We\u2019ve got a lot of work to do. But we\u2019re trying to think of the challenge that way. If ultimately those things become strong enough that player counts can go up and we can get more and more interesting things at larger player numbers, I\u2019m all for that. That\u2019s certainly compatible. But at the same time, we really want to make sure we\u2019re getting true, empowered relationships down and working well first before we contemplate the scale for scale\u2019s sake,\u201d Flynn added.<\/p>\n

It’s likely that we have to wait several years until the first Improbable game is going to launch…<\/p>\n
