SpongeBob SquarePants… *laughing pirate narrator from the title theme*

Despite the coronavirus, a few developers and publishers still decided to leave their location. THQ Nordic and Purple Lamp Studios have done the same, as the publisher and the dev team was out at the Boston event to allow the attendants access to play a demo of the remake.

Indeed, a remake – SpongeBob: SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom launched in late 2003 (October or November, depending on the region) on PlayStation 2, Xbox, Gamecube, GBA, and PC. Aside from the PC port (handled by AWE Games) and the GBA version (done by Vicarious Visions), the game was developed by Heavy Iron Studios, and they got fame for the Spongebob games. Indeed, games – a year after Battle for Bikini Bottom, they made a game adaptation of the film, and in 2009, they also made the Wii and X360 version of Truth or Square (the PSP version was done by Barking Lizards Technologies, while the DS port was handled by Altron).

The remake was made by another dev team in Austria instead of a US team. And it’s coming… shortly. The action platformer’s remake was announced in June, and it is supposed to arrive this year. If the retail version will be just as good as the PAX demo, then THQ Nordic has done a good job (especially seeing how they will add cut content into the remake, including the Robo-Squidward boss fight…).

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, which can’t be said by a single breath, will launch this year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The publisher might aim for a PlayStation 5 and an Xbox Series X version as well (plus their rumoured second versions…). Perhaps this is why the game’s exact release date hasn’t been revealed yet?
