Amazon has dived into the world of video games, with a TV production in the pipeline for its adaptation of the post-apocalyptic RPG Fallout, and plans to do the same with Mass Effect. Interestingly, one of the creators of Fallout has confirmed that they are also working on a TV series called Wasteland, a prequel to the Fallout saga.

“Wasteland was very close to becoming a TV series,” said veteran Brian Fargo

“So close that a 2 hour pilot was written,” added the creative, who is also responsible for other role-playing classics such as The Bard’s Tale and the fantastic Torment: Tides of Numenera. But far from being content to leave us with just this confirmation, the developer also shared the script for the pilot episode.

“I thought it would be interesting to post the whole screenplay on the internet? Would love to hear your feedback. Enjoy!” concludes Fargo. Predictably, fans are ecstatic at the idea of turning the nuclear wasteland of Wasteland into a TV series, so when asked why the series was axed, Fargo simply replied on social media, “Typical Hollywood story… not predictable.”

Fargo didn’t go into further details about who designed the series, although we do know the names of the scriptwriters – British writers Adam Gyngell and Fred Armesto, who worked on TV productions including Strangers and White Dragon. Will we ever see a Wasteland series? At the moment, it seems that plans have been put on ice, but there is no doubt that this is a post-apocalyptic universe that would be great to adapt for television.

The latest instalment in inXile’s RPG saga is the excellent Wasteland 3, transporting us to a cold and cruel Colorado ravaged by nuclear war.
