AMD FSR 2.0’s breakthrough should come as a surprise to no one. Nowadays, words like “upscaling” and “ray tracing” are often bandied about, as such technologies are now an integral part of the industry. Nvidia is using its RTX software in several AAA titles, but its most significant rival AMD has some tricks up its sleeve too. The equivalent of Team Red comes in the form of FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR, the company’s open-source upscaling algorithm, which recently released version 2.0. With this in mind, it now appears that this technology is compatible with many modern games.

That’s according to a recent report from WCCFTech, which cites several Reddit posts.

It seems that FSR 2.0 is already compatible with games like Death Stranding, Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. There are also instructions on how to implement AI in each game. It should be pointed out that since these are mods, users may have some problems with the transition from Nvidia’s DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling, to AMD’s FSR, which can result in some notable “ghosting”. The report warns that such mods should not be used in online games, lest players risk being banned.

Since AMD launched a new version of its upscaling technology, there have been several attempts to implement it in several popular releases. For example, a mod for Cyberpunk 2077 adds FSR 2.0, which was then used in Red Dead Redemption 2 itself, and a mod for Dying Light 2 is in the works. Obviously, gamers are interested in some upscaling technology that rivals Nvidia’s much more proprietary software. In any case, it’s up to users to decide if they’re interested in AMD FSR 2.0 in their games, but many will enjoy the extra visual and performance boost that such an AI can give.

AMD and Nvidia aren’t the only ones with upscaling technology, Intel has also introduced its XeSS software.

The latter is said to support games such as Death Stranding, Hitman 3 and PUBG. Some may not be interested in such things, but given that upscaling can help improve graphics quality without putting extra strain on hardware, many consider it a helpful feature, especially for open source versions such as AMD FSR.

As if that weren’t enough, Apple recently talked about MetalFX, the tech giant’s own upscaling algorithm, which is shipped with its new M2 chip. It’s clear that upscaling is the future of gaming, and it seems that gamers have a lot more choice in the market, although it’s not out of the question that AMD FSR will be the one to dethrone Nvidia from its current throne.

Source: WCCFTech
