Sony has released a new promotional video for PlayStation VR2 that focuses on some of the critical features of the virtual reality headset. The next-generation headset is tentatively scheduled for release in early 2023 and will be a PS5 exclusive. However, promoting the virtual reality headset could be tricky, as gamers won’t be able to experience VR for themselves until it’s available. Doubly tricky if PS VR 2 is a generational step up from the original PS VR headset. However, Sony is doing everything it can.

Much of the trailer for the PlayStation VR2 headset focuses on the games planned for the device.

These games include Horizon: Call of the Mountain, Firewall Ultra, No Man’s Sky, Resident Evil Village and The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution. It also helps to focus on upcoming VR games, as the PS VR2 headset will not be backwards compatible with PS VR titles.

The new PlayStation VR2 video features start with the VR headset’s enhanced resolution. Dubbed the ‘4K HDR Display’, the headset actually has two 2000×2 040 pixel displays – one for each eye. 4K or not, this is still more than four times the resolution of the original headset. The next main feature is eye tracking, at least in games that support it.

The example shown uses eye tracking in the Firewall Ultra menus to select a weapon from the player’s inventory. “Foveated Rendering” also uses eye tracking to provide resolution highlights where the player is looking. The last headset feature shown is a 110-degree field of view, which is 10 degrees more than the original PS VR headset.

Other features are shown in the trailer focus on the PlayStation VR2 controllers.

The controllers feature finger touch sensing, haptic button feedback and adaptive triggers. These features are designed to make players’ hands feel more realistic in the game.

It’s essential to remember that this is just a fraction of the new features in PS VR2. Sony has already confirmed that PS VR2 will feature improved convenience for lens positioning, inside-out tracking with four headset cameras, and single-cable connectivity via the PS5’s front USB port. The original PlayStation VR is intended to address many of the biggest criticisms of the original.

Of course, there are still plenty of questions for Sony to answer.

PS VR2 has no release date yet, and no price. Nor does it matter how many features PS VR2 supports if its games aren’t designed around them. As impressive as PlayStation VR2 looks on paper and in trailers, Sony still has difficulty convincing PS5 users to buy an expensive headset that doesn’t even support backwards compatibility with the original PS VR.
