The thriller/comedy is based on a tragicomic incident that happened. In 1985, a drug smuggler dropped a backpack of cocaine from his small plane over Kentucky because the load was heavy, but then parachuted to his death. They found not only his body, but also that of a bear far away, with 40 opened dust bags next to it. The teddy bear that died of an overdose became part of local folklore, it was stuffed and exhibited under the nickname Cocky (Kokós), it is also available as a souvenir.

In this story, Elizabeth Banks, the film’s director-producer (Perfect sound films, actor and producer) saw the fantasy and thought about the plot further. In Cocaine Bear, the teddy bear does not die of sudden cardiac arrest, but goes on a rampage from the many coke and causes a great bloodbath in the area. In Banks’ view, Cocaine Bear is the kind of revenge story in which outraged nature strikes back.

The sad interesting thing about the production is that it is Ray Liotta’s last film.

(Cocaine Bear – domestic release: February 23, 2023)

Source: UIP
