One of the biggest surprises of the Super Mario Bros. movie was when it was revealed that Keegan-Michael Key would voice Toad, the mushroom-headed sidekick. The actor and comedian recently talked about how he prepared for this role and what challenges it involved.

Speaking on the Today Show, Key said he was thrilled to be cast in the film because he loved the Mario games as a kid. He also added that he tried to make Toad’s voice unrecognizable.

“I didn’t want to make a sound that sounded like mine,” Key said. “I thought it was a good opportunity to try something completely different.”

Key also revealed how he would pronounce the names of Mario and Luigi from a sketch of one of his most popular characters, substitute teacher Mr. Garvey.

“For Mario, I would say Mar-ee-oh,” Key said, mimicking Mr. Garvey’s accent. “And for Luigi: Loo-ee-jee.”

The Super Mario Bros. movie will be an animated work produced by the Illumination studio in collaboration with Nintendo. The film stars Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi) and Jack Black (Bowser).
