Almost 13 million people have plunged into the online first-person shooter Destiny since its launch in September, according to the developer Bungie. That’s 12,869,066 players to be exact, as of the end of last week, Bungie said in a Weekly Update. Also 22,932,276 Guardians have been created, Bungie declared. If you have never played Destiny: Guardians are the game’s playable hero characters. You can create three Guardians per account.
At the moment over 500 designers are still working on the game, its downloadable content and, naturally, Destiny 2, Bungie said. Other interesting tidbits: Atheon, the boss of the Vault of Glass raid, has been beaten 2.4 million times. Crota, the boss of the new Crota’s End raid, has been defeated a paltry 769 times – but DLC The Dark Below only launched early in December.
Activision, which reportedly spent a gigantic $500 million to develop Destiny and also add future content in the next 10 years, had high hopes for the game – but it has yet to announce an exact sales figure. It has said it’s the biggest new IP launch of all time, beating out Ubisoft‘s Watchdogs. In October 2014 Bungie announced proudly, that Destiny had 3.2 million daily players.
It’s not bad, but to make a comparison, an incredible 67 million people play the MOBA League of Legends every month, according to developer Riot Games, which means 27 million play every day. It’s indubitably the most played game in the world. Valve’s MOBA Dota 2, comfortably the most-played game on Steam, had 9.8 million unique players in the last month. But let’s not forget that a comparison with those games is a bit biased, since those games are free-to-play and supported by microtransactions. On the other hand Destiny is a full-price game and does not include any microtransactions – yet.
Activision also should present the updated sales or commitment figures for their other big franchise: Call of Duty now Advanced Warfare. It’s a well-known fact that in 2011, the series what at its pinnacle: it was played by 40 million monthly active users. That number will be of course lower now, but will be still higher than Destiny as Activision’s most popular game series.
Other interesting figures are from MMO World of Warcraft which has – at last count – over 10 million subscribers, which is also boosted by the recent release of expansion Warlords of Draenor.
