STALKER 2 creators have unbanned a Steam player who accused them of “lying” about PC requirements. The user had been banned for pointing out an error in the list of minimum and recommended configurations.
After years of development and numerous challenges caused by the Ukrainian War, STALKER 2 is finally around the corner. Scheduled for release on November 20, the developers are putting the final touches on their long-anticipated action-survival shooter. However, part of their efforts had to be redirected to extinguish an unexpected controversy: a Steam player was banned for highlighting inaccuracies in the game’s minimum and recommended PC requirements.
The incident quickly gained traction among players, sparking waves of criticism toward GSC Game World. Specifically, a player was banned after posting a detailed message (shared via Reddit user RTcore), stating: “The official table says NOTHING about this, but Mol1t, the Community Manager, literally said it in a reply to someone on his official Discord. ‘To achieve similar performance on the specified PC specs, you must use TSR upscaling technology for minimum settings. To achieve the specified performance on Medium, High, and Epic settings, you must use DLSS, TSR, and the like.’”
“For those of you who don’t understand what this means: if the official chart tells you that your 2070 Super would be able to run the game at 1080p@60FPS on Medium settings, this means that you MUST be using DLSS/FSR in order for your PC to be able to hit that,” the player continued. “This is a straight-up lie, because what upscaling technologies like DLSS and FSR do is literally render the game at a lower resolution and use AI to upscale it to a resolution that looks worse than your native resolution. Using FSR/DLSS at 1080p means the game is actually rendered at 480p-720p-900p and so on, depending on the quality settings used.”
“In short, they lied. They deceived people into believing their PC could run the game with certain presets and resolutions, when this is just another careless failure of Unreal Engine 5. Cancel your pre-orders and don’t let companies laugh at you and steal your money with lies,” the player concluded. GSC Game World moderators quickly responded with an immediate ban, claiming the user was spreading “false information about the company.” The move sparked widespread criticism within the gaming community.
The Moderator “Made a Mistake” With the Ban
GSC Game World swiftly responded to the backlash. The player’s ban has now been lifted, with the developers admitting that the action was a mistake. The studio posted an apology via X to the Pirat_Nation account, stating: “Guys, we are very sorry about this situation. Our new moderator made this ban. He made a mistake. Before launch, we recruited an additional team of moderators to help us, but that does not absolve us of responsibility. We have now lifted the ban.” Additionally, the studio has updated the STALKER 2 Steam page to provide clearer information regarding the use of upscaling technologies in the PC requirements chart.
