The designer of The Sims not only talked about his upcoming new game (Proxi), but also looked back into the past as he was also involved with The Sims at Maxis.
Proxi will be an AI life simulator based on our memories.
You describe one of your memories (a trip, for example) and it turns it into an animated scene. The more scenes we create, the more they are added to our “mind world”. This is a 3D environment that we can explore and play with characters (proxies) created from our memories and with whom we can interact. This is exciting, but what about The Sims? Wright shared a rather interesting anecdote about this on Twitch:”I’ve always believed that you can take almost anything, I could just take a rock off the ground and make a game about that rock.It could be little microbes growing on the surface, going through the seasons, all sorts of things.
If you zoom into the right scale of space and time, I’m sure I could make a pretty cool game about a rock. A very famous pop star in Germany, like Britney Spears level, we heard she was a big Sims fan. She was a workaholic, going from concert to concert to concert. I asked her, “Tell me what your life is like in The Sims” and she said, “Oh, it’s so boring, it’s wonderful. A mundane life, getting up, having a routine, that was her fantasy,” said Wright, forgetting who he was talking about…
And how did he come up with the concept for Proxi? “I can’t remember when I first thought of [Proxi]. I think it’s more of an idea that’s been percolating for a long time. Obviously it has a lot to do with The Sims. I found myself getting closer and closer to the player. There’s a saying that I live by, that no game designer has ever gone wrong by overestimating the narcissism of their players. It makes sense that the more I can make a game about you, the more you’ll like it,” Wright added.
Twitch moderators Arielehm and Emily Morganti played The Sims 2 on the stream, with Mortimer’s character Goth being scared by the ghost of Victor Goth (Mortimer’s dead relative) after visiting the cemetery. Using the memory board, the hosts could see that Mortimer had preserved this memory, as well as other important events and milestones in his life.
So Wright’s new concept seems exciting.
We are confident that Proxi will be a great success.
