The creator of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has openly discussed the possibility of another long-awaited remake, while making it clear that he has no intention of directing it himself. After more than a decade with the saga, Naoki Hamaguchi believes the time has come for new creators to take charge.
There are still several months to go before the release of Part 3 of the Final Fantasy VII remake, and although Square Enix insists that development is progressing smoothly, fans are already speculating about what the franchise’s next major remake could be. For many long-time players, Final Fantasy VI stands as the pinnacle of the series, and the idea of seeing that JRPG rebuilt from the ground up with modern ambition feels like a dream scenario.
A Final Fantasy VI Remake Would Be a Dream, but Not One He Would Direct
The director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has repeatedly stated that the sixth entry is his personal favorite in the franchise. However, in a recent interview with GamerBraves, he clarified his stance on potentially directing such a remake. In short, he wants the project to exist, but he does not want to lead it himself. The reason, he explains, is entirely human, namely creative exhaustion. Hamaguchi notes that he has spent roughly ten consecutive years working on the Final Fantasy VII remake project, and only now is he beginning to see “the light at the end of the tunnel” as the third installment moves forward.
After dedicating more than a decade to reimagining Midgar and the world of Gaia, the director has begun questioning whether he should be the one to helm another undertaking of similar scale. “Rather than me leading yet another remake, I would prefer to see a new creator step into that role,” he explained. He emphasized that this does not mean stepping away entirely, but instead adopting a supportive position to help guide a new team while fresh voices bring a different perspective to the stories of Terra, Celes, and Kefka.
Hamaguchi is also clearly focused on what lies ahead. Having devoted so much time to reinventing a game that first appeared decades ago, he has admitted that creating something entirely new is an increasingly appealing prospect. Although Final Fantasy VI remains one of his formative gaming experiences, finishing Cloud’s story seems to have sparked a desire to stop looking backward and start building something original, a path that could ultimately lead toward Final Fantasy XVII.
