Divinity Could Be Expanded with a Feature that Wasn’t in Larian’s Previous Games!

Although Divinity’s design director has not announced what features Larian wants to add to the new Divinity game, it is possible to speculate.

Although the bloody trailer that appeared at The Game Awards certainly piqued interest, we still don’t know much about Larian‘s next Divinity game. Even the teasers are shrouded in mystery. Lead designer Nick Pechenin responded to a question on the studio’s Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) thread with a comment that seems to reveal something but confirms nothing.

Pechenin wrote that something bothered him when he explored the starting areas of Divinity: Original Sin and Baldur’s Gate 3. When you think about it, it’s obvious. In Divinity, he can finally do what he wanted to do in all the previous games. Judging by his response, this mysterious feature must be the new mechanic he’s most proud of. Commenters quickly began speculating about what he might be referring to. The most popular theory is swimming, which makes sense. In the introductions to both Divinity: Original Sin and Baldur’s Gate 3, players find themselves on a beach. The inaccessible shores surrounded by water have become a trademark of the studio, much like how Bethesda starts every The Elder Scrolls game in a dungeon.

Adding swimming seems like a lot of work for little gain. Sure, we want to explore the oceans, but adding a new dimension to a game we expect to be a top-down CRPG seems like a nightmare. Perhaps swimming would just mean treading water here, but then what would make it such a cool feature? Sticking with the water theme, another idea comes to mind: Maybe the new mechanic is fishing?

We love games where we can cast spells and fish equally. Sailing also comes to mind, but we’re trying to contain our excitement because it might end up being something completely different.
