Call of Duty Finally Slips on PlayStation: Black Ops 7 Loses Its Crown

The Black Ops 7 downturn is real – and it’s now clearly visible on PlayStation. For the first time in a decade, Call of Duty is nowhere near dominating sales.

It’s been obvious for years that Call of Duty has been showing signs of fatigue, but Black Ops 7 seems to be the entry that finally made a large portion of the community’s exhaustion impossible to ignore. After more than ten years of yearly releases, a growing number of players feel the formula has become overly safe and predictable, while the latest campaign reportedly fails to meet the standards people expect from Activision. Taken together, those factors have created the perfect environment for the franchise to lose momentum on the very platform where it once ruled without challenge.

The Downward Slide of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7

According to an official PlayStation Blog post, Call of Duty did not manage to break into the top five most downloaded PS Store games of 2025 on PS5 – something that hasn’t happened in ten years. A new Call of Duty is typically a guaranteed sales heavyweight on PlayStation, especially around the holidays, but in recent months Activision has watched other releases seize the spotlight and interrupt what had been an uninterrupted decade-long reign (as also highlighted by TweakTown).

So what’s behind the drop? Player burnout is certainly part of it, but stronger competition is also a key factor, with titles such as Battlefield 6 and Arc Raiders reportedly reaching 10 million and 12 million sales, respectively. There’s no confirmed figure for how many copies Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has sold, but most reports point to a steep decline of roughly 60% compared to Black Ops 6, which previously set new franchise records.

PS Store 2025 downloads: Black Ops 7 missing from the top list

As the image shows, multiple games outperformed Black Ops 7. The usual evergreen hits such as Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V remain dominant, but sports juggernauts also filled the chart: NBA 2K26, EA SPORTS Madden NFL 26/College Football 26, the two most recent EA SPORTS FC releases, and Forza Horizon 5, which has surpassed 5 million copies sold on PS5. From Activision’s perspective, the optics are grim; the company has promised adjustments for Black Ops 7 and future entries, and even Bobby Kotick has suggested the decline of Call of Duty and the console market played a role in selling the company to Microsoft.
