Meanwhile, there was some controversy surrounding the game’s subreddit. In the end, though, the audience’s voice prevailed.
Anthem is dead, and perhaps that’s for the best. Most of us had long forgotten about it, so we were genuinely surprised last summer when we found out that the servers were still running. This is more the fault of the system that created the game than the game itself. Who told BioWare to make a live service shooter? A small group of dedicated fans expressed hope that they could bring the game back without relying on Electronic Arts’ servers. Their hope became a reality when former executive producer Mark Darrah revealed that Anthem had local server code a few months before its release. More importantly, he revealed that the code could be saved and restored.
This is still a long way from being realized, but it seems that at least some people are moving in this direction. The video below shows Anthem up and running, with two accounts logged in simultaneously (the second account joins at around 4:30). It’s still in the very early stages. And799, a Reddit user working on the Fort’s Forge restoration project, described it as unfinished and advised everyone to moderate their expectations. There is still a long way to go, and the entire project could fail due to technical problems or Electronic Arts’ almost guaranteed legal threats.
Even if everything goes perfectly, we don’t expect Anthem to make a big comeback. The game was a flop and is no longer available, so it won’t attract new players out of curiosity. While it’s great that Anthem will remain available to its fans, hoping that Electronic Arts will recognize its mistake and officially bring Anthem back is overly optimistic.

In the meantime, the Anthem subreddit could have been made read-only. However, the community opposed this idea, and the moderators admitted that they hadn’t realized how much demand there still is for this forum. They are therefore taking a break to rethink their approach.
