The game, which was released in July, has not performed as well as the publisher, Dreamhaven, expected.
Moonshot Games, the developer of Wildgate, which was released in July, is laying off staff because the game is unable to sustain itself. In a statement to Game Developer, Dreamhaven, the studio’s parent company, said that although interest in the sci-fi shooter game increased after its release on the Epic Games Store, it failed to attract enough players to justify the size of the development team. The number of employees laid off is unknown.
“In early January 2026, Wildgate launched on the Epic Games Store, where it was well-received by new and returning players. It was great to see so many people gather on Discord to share tips and stories and enjoy spending time together in the Reach. Despite the increase in player numbers and the game’s overall positive reception, it wasn’t enough to sustain the size of our development team. Therefore, we made the difficult decision to reduce team roles to ensure that we can continue to deliver updates to the game while operating in a manner that supports the studio in the long term. We remain focused on Wildgate‘s next content update, which introduces quality-of-life improvements, including the highly requested progression system, which we anticipate releasing later this quarter,” Dreamhaven said in its statement.
Moonshot Games was one of two studios operating under the Dreamhaven umbrella. The publisher was founded in 2020 by Mike Morhaime, former president of Blizzard. The other developer was Secret Door, creator of Sunderfolk. Dreamhaven also made an unspecified number of layoffs in September. At the time, the publisher said that work on Wildgate, Sunderfolk, and other projects was not affected by the layoffs.
Morhaime said that these decisions are never easy because they affect talented colleagues who played a key role in establishing Dreamhaven and supporting it through an eventful year. However, this is yet another round of layoffs.
