Fallout: New Vegas: Finally, We Can Properly Play in Third-Person View! [VIDEO]

We’ve waited a long time for this mod, which thoroughly overhauls third-person movement animations in Obsidian Entertainment’s classic RPG.

It’s always disappointing when people describe modern Fallout games as purely first-person RPGs. A major part of their appeal – just like in The Elder Scrolls series – lies in the ability to switch freely between first- and third-person views at the press of a button. When you’re crawling through a narrow tunnel packed with ghouls, low on .308 ammo and clutching an automatic rifle, first-person view feels right. But when you’re roaming the wasteland in a dusty coat or beating back Fiends with a golf club, third-person perspective simply fits better.

Most modders have traditionally focused on first-person animations, as that viewpoint is more popular and easier to tweak. That’s why it took so long for modder Wombat to deliver a full overhaul of third-person animations in Fallout: New Vegas – and importantly, this upgrade applies to NPCs as well.

Enhanced Animations – 3rd Person Movement is clearly the first entry in a planned series of advanced animation mods. It reworks the core movement animations while standing, including idle, walking, running, jumping, and landing, all with proper directional variants. The mod also adds extra animations for melee weapons and minigun attacks, offering a glimpse of what’s coming in future updates.

On top of that, the mod fixes several long-standing animation issues not addressed by the earlier 3rd Person Animation Fixpack. These include unnatural finger bending, stuttering at the end of animation loops, and characters briefly sliding across the ground when stopping while rotating the camera in third-person view.

While some tweaks are very specific – such as making the backward lean when holding a minigun look less spine-breaking – improvements to melee combat and jumping while moving will be far more noticeable in everyday gameplay. To install the mod, you’ll first need the kNVSE Animation Plugin and the JIP LN NVSE Plugin, both of which are standard requirements for many modern New Vegas mods.
