The Prince of Persia Remake Was Nearly Finished Before Ubisoft Scrapped It

It was not all bad news for Ubisoft in recent months. The publisher is preparing the return of one of its most beloved franchises, and that comeback could arrive sooner than expected. An official listing suggests Rayman may return later this year.

An industry insider has revealed new details about the cancelled Prince of Persia remake. Reports indicate the project was 99.99 percent complete when Ubisoft ultimately shut it down, while internal assessments of the game were sharply divided among teams.

Ubisoft recently went through a controversial restructuring that led to six games being cancelled, others delayed, and a steep single-day drop in its stock price. The long-awaited Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake was caught in that turbulence and shelved.

According to trusted insider xj0nathan, the game was essentially finished when Ubisoft pulled the plug at the last possible moment. Sources say only a handful of bugs remained, yet the project was cancelled, with newly surfaced images suggesting the Prince’s final look fell short of earlier leaked concept art.

Rumors point to quality concerns as the main reason behind the decision. Multiple internal reviews reportedly failed to meet Ubisoft’s standards, and industry insider Tom Henderson suggested feedback ranged from “fine” to “absolutely awful.” “I’ve heard internal messages and QA reports saying the game was fine, and I’ve also heard from QA testers who said it was absolutely awful. There was a lot of miscommunication and serious issues behind the scenes.”

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake endured several turbulent phases during development but was said to be progressing well throughout 2024. In the end, Ubisoft was either unwilling or unable to commit further resources to finishing it.
