Xbox Admits Its PS5 Releases Have Been Inconsistent

“Sometimes we’re inconsistent.” Xbox has admitted it needs to improve how it brings its own games to PS5. Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan says the first-party multiplatform push has been uneven, and the company wants to address it. Xbox says it aims to be “more consistent” with PS5 release timing, but it is not promising day-one access for every game.

A new era has begun for Xbox, and one of the biggest shifts in its ecosystem is the multiplatform move that brings Xbox Game Studios titles to PS5 and both Nintendo Switch systems. While plenty of PlayStation players are happy to see those releases, the reality is that the approach has been selective and inconsistent, with several former Xbox exclusives landing on other platforms months – or even years – later.

Microsoft is also openly acknowledging that and says it wants to do better. Xbox Game Studios chief Craig Duncan told GamesRadar that Xbox will try to be “more consistent” with PS5 release timing going forward for its first-party titles. Last year, 2025, highlighted the unevenness – some games reached PlayStation/Switch later, while others launched simultaneously across platforms.

Xbox Wants to Be More Consistent on PS5

There are obvious examples like the Indiana Jones game and Avowed, while other titles did arrive day one, such as Gears of War: Reloaded and The Outer Worlds 2. That split is expected to continue in 2026, with Forza Horizon 6 debuting on PS5 months after Xbox Series X|S and PC, while Fable and the Halo: CE remake are set for every platform except Nintendo Switch/2. Duncan says the reason is rooted in development realities.

“There are always development realities when these projects begin: the size of the team and the plans we have at the start. When a strategy changes, you might have a plan that exists with a game, and you might be able to adapt it, or you might not. That’s why it happens. And to be clear, it’s a totally fair criticism. Sometimes we are inconsistent. You see some games in one place, others in several. I just want you to know that we’re going to work on it and try to be more consistent with what we do,” Duncan says.

“For our developers, if you’re on the Fable team, all you want is for as many people as possible who love Fable to appreciate the great work the team is doing. That’s always our goal. It’s rarely more complicated than that. We want to take advantage of the features and nuances of each system. That can lead to a certain degree of choice. If we were only in a position to release a game on one platform and not make it look or play really well, then I don’t think we would do it. Teams have a limited size. We have a certain amount of resources. Not everything is limited,” concludes the head of Xbox Game Studios, pointing to Grounded 2 as an example – it launched in early access on PC and Xbox Series X|S, and is planned to arrive on PS5 later.
