Sony Sends a Nudge to PS4 Players – The Push Toward PS5 Is Getting Louder

Still playing on PS4 today? Sony believes now is the moment to move on, saying “now is the perfect time to upgrade to a PS5 console.” PlayStation has begun sending messages to certain PS4 users encouraging them to switch to PS5.

The PlayStation 4 is turning into a true long-run veteran. With more than 13 years behind it, the PS4 stands among the best-selling consoles ever made, and it still remains active in many homes. However, Sony appears more determined than ever to convince the millions who still rely on it to finally make the generational leap. The PlayStation 5 has been available for over five years and has passed 84 million units sold, yet for the company, that milestone still isn’t enough.

Sony Wants You to Move to PS5

According to Insider Gaming, the aging PlayStation 4 has started receiving direct system messages from PlayStation itself, effectively “inviting” users to upgrade their hardware. Sony is sending notifications to PS4 owners encouraging them to look at PS5 deals so they do not miss the major releases of 2026 and the standout titles of 2025 – a move that clearly plays into FOMO, the fear of missing out.

“Whether you want to catch up on 2025 hits like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, ARC Raiders, and Ghost of Yotei, or you’re preparing for the most anticipated games of 2026, including SAROS, 007 First Light, Nioh 3, and many more, now is the perfect time to upgrade to the PS5 console. Scan the QR code to see the latest PS5 console deals.” That is the message appearing on some PS4 systems, as reported by Zuby_Tech.

This form of “pressure” from Sony is not limited to the game lineup, but also extends to services. As mentioned before, January 2026 marks a turning point for PlayStation Plus, since there is no guarantee PS4 titles will continue appearing in the PS Plus Essential selection, which may shift to a PS5-only focus. On top of that comes the gradual shutdown of certain PSN features on PS4, another factor that could motivate users to purchase a PS5.

Even so, it is worth remembering that PS4 is close to surpassing a historic PS2-era record, as it remains a console supported by third-party studios until 2027. With the PS5 Pro already in circulation and the PS6 still years away, Sony’s objective is clear: bring its entire ecosystem fully into the current generation.
