If you’re gaming on PS5 or PS4, a new download is waiting for you. Here are the four main highlights of the latest PlayStation update. Sony has released PS5 version 26.01-12.60.00 and PS4 version 13.04, both now available to all players.
Sony continues to refine the player experience through ongoing updates for its PlayStation consoles. Yes, more than a decade has passed since the PS4 first launched and five years since the PS5 arrived, yet both systems still receive firmware patches designed to fine-tune how they run. The company has now confirmed the rollout of versions 26.01-12.60.00 for PS5 and 13.04 for PS4, along with the additions they introduce.
PS5 Improvements and a Way to Leave Friends on “Read”
Let’s begin with PS5. Based on details shared on the official PlayStation website, version 26.01-12.60.00 delivers four new features that combine quality-of-life upgrades with entirely new user-facing options. The update, which is already deploying worldwide, brings the following functions and settings:
- Players can now jump straight from the ‘Friends’ Activity’ widget into the games those users are currently playing. This effectively simplifies the process of joining someone else’s session.
- Players can enable read receipts. The familiar “seen” indicator from messaging apps is now on PS5, allowing others to know when their messages have been viewed. The feature is rolling out gradually and can be activated in the Settings menu.
- Messaging and general usability have been enhanced on certain screens.
- System software performance and stability have also been improved.
Security Fixes on PS4
As mentioned earlier, the PS4 is now more than ten years old, and Sony no longer invests the same level of time and resources into feature-heavy updates for that system. Even so, the company still issues patches to deal with vulnerabilities that remain within the console. Version 13.04 is one such case, as the release notes on the PlayStation website state that the download includes “some security fixes to the software.”
This is far from unusual. In fact, security updates for older hardware like the PS4 are widely known to focus on closing system vulnerabilities or exploits. In practical terms, Sony releases these patches to block unauthorized access, prevent weaknesses that could enable game piracy, and address related risks. Without them, the console would remain exposed to issues that could impact PlayStation users.
