TECH NEWS – Samsung has unveiled the 13-inch Samsung Color E-Paper (EM13DX model). The company’s Color E-Paper lineup expands with a display whose bezel is made from bio-resin derived from phytoplankton. The paper-thin screen features advanced digital ink technology and operates with ultra-low power consumption, offering businesses a practical alternative to traditional printed advertising materials.
“Businesses are increasingly seeking more flexible and efficient communication methods, and Samsung Color E-Paper represents a shift in how digital displays integrate into everyday business operations,” said Hyoung Jae Kim, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business. “By applying innovative technologies such as phytoplankton-based bio-resin, we demonstrate our commitment to advancing both display technology and the materials behind it. Our Color E-Paper products are designed to replace paper usage with ultra-low energy consumption and an ultra-thin, lightweight design.”
Vivid colors and clarity for modern digital displays
As the smallest member of the product family, the new 13-inch Samsung Color E-Paper provides a compact solution for shelves, counters, tables, and doors, where traditional paper signage is still widely used. The display, similar in size to an A4 sheet of paper, delivers a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Thanks to its rechargeable built-in battery, USB Type-C support, and flexible mounting options, the display can be installed without permanent power cables. Its ultra-slim 17.9 mm design weighs just 0.9 kg even with the battery, making it easy to mount or reposition as campaigns evolve. Samsung’s advanced color imaging algorithm enhances color accuracy and readability, delivering a true paper-like appearance. By softening color transitions and refining edges, the E-Paper can produce vivid visuals reminiscent of traditional posters and point-of-purchase (POP) materials, helping businesses transition naturally from print to digital solutions.
Low environmental impact displays with bio-based materials
The 13-inch Samsung Color E-Paper is the company’s first commercially available display to use phytoplankton-based bio-resin in its bezel. Independent verification by global safety and sustainability certification body UL confirmed that the device housing consists of 45 percent recycled plastic and 10 percent phytoplankton-based bio-resin. This material innovation was developed as an alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics, and its use can reduce carbon dioxide emissions during manufacturing by more than 40 percent.
Daily operation has also been designed for efficiency. The display can retain static images with 0 watt power consumption, reducing unnecessary energy use without compromising reliability. During content updates, total energy consumption remains significantly lower than that of conventional digital displays, which can help lower operating costs over the long term.
Simple content management with the Samsung E-Paper app and Samsung VXT
The 13-inch Samsung Color E-Paper enables straightforward content control in both local and remote operation scenarios. With the Samsung E-Paper app available on Android and iOS, staff can update and manage local content directly from their own devices, eliminating the need for a separate remote control.
The display is also compatible with the Samsung VXT platform. This cloud-based content and remote device management system allows users to adjust hardware settings remotely, troubleshoot issues, and create and publish content with minimal training. For Color E-Paper, Samsung VXT also offers dedicated features to optimize content visibility, along with a preview function that enables color accuracy checks before publishing.
In addition to the new 13-inch display, Samsung will introduce a 20-inch model for the first time at the ISE 2026 audiovisual and systems integration trade show, held in Barcelona from February 3 to 6. With the expansion of the Color E-Paper lineup – alongside the existing 32-inch model – the portfolio is increasingly positioned to serve a broad range of business needs.
Samsung continues to be a leading player in the global digital signage market, achieving a 36.2 percent global market share by unit sales in the third quarter of 2025, reinforcing its 17-year position as one of the world’s leading commercial display providers.
