The creators of Silent Hill 2 Remake have pushed back on a theory about their next game, and it’s bad news for anyone hoping for a Rule of Rose remake. Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno says the mystery project is not a remake.
Bloober Team is putting the finishing touches on its next reveal. The studio behind Silent Hill 2 Remake and Cronos: The New Dawn has drawn plenty of eyes with a cryptic countdown set to hit zero on February 15 at midnight (Spanish Peninsula Time), and when it does, the Polish team will announce its new project. To crank up the hype ahead of that moment, the developers shared a post on X that convinced many readers the secret title was a remake of Rule of Rose, the PS2 horror game that earned a cult following. But the head of Bloober Team has now stepped in to dismiss that idea.
Piotr Babieno didn’t leave much room for interpretation. Responding to a Twisted Voxel post on LinkedIn suggesting the team could be making a Rule of Rose remake, he wrote: “It’s a good guess, but no.” He then wrapped up by stressing that “definitely, [the Bloober Team game] is not a remake” (via FRVR).
In short, Bloober Team is building something new. It could easily be a sequel tied to one of the studio’s known lines, or the opening chapter of a brand-new IP. And while the Polish team proved with Silent Hill 2 Remake that it can handle the pressure of reviving a classic (which is exactly why Konami tapped them to remake the first Silent Hill), they’ve also surprised horror fans with original experiences like the Layers of Fear series and, more recently, Cronos: The New Dawn.
Bloober Team Has Registered the Name “Onyx: The Dark Grip”
With a Rule of Rose remake seemingly off the table, it’s worth noting that Bloober Team has registered the name “Onyx: The Dark Grip” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. That filing may or may not be connected to the mysterious countdown mentioned at the start of this article, but everything points to it being tied to one of the company’s upcoming projects. If so, it would join a slate that already includes two experiences known as Project M and Project F, alongside the previously mentioned remake of the first Silent Hill.
