The RPG Most Faithful to Classic Fallout Returns With a Vast Post-Apocalyptic World and a Deeper Story

The role-playing game that perhaps most accurately captures the spirit of the original Fallout titles is coming back, bringing with it a massive post-apocalyptic open world and an even more layered narrative. AtomTeam has finally unveiled Atom RPG 2, the sequel to its CRPG inspired by the classic games from Interplay Productions.

I can’t quite explain what makes apocalyptic settings so compelling, especially those that take place after a nuclear conflict, but many studios have chosen the aftermath of a Third World War as the backdrop for their stories. Atom RPG, however, takes a different route compared to many modern titles. There is no frantic, explosion-driven spectacle here: we are dealing with a classic role-playing game in the style of the original Fallout installments, set in a Soviet Union shattered by the Cold War, and now, at last, it is getting a sequel: Atom RPG 2.

Created by the independent studio AtomTeam, Atom RPG 2 promises meaningful advancements over its predecessor, not only visually but also in terms of gameplay systems. While the first game stood out for faithfully recreating the classic Fallout atmosphere and offering a relatively linear open world, the sequel significantly increases the scale of its map and places much stronger emphasis on environmental verticality.

Atom RPG 2 Is a Bigger and Bolder RPG Than Its Predecessor

At the same time, following the path set by the previous installment, Atom RPG 2 retains its isometric viewpoint, a strong focus on player choice, and turn-based tactical combat within a world laid waste by nuclear catastrophe. Beyond the main storyline, the game will feature a wide variety of additional activities, including fishing, construction, racing, and other survival-focused tasks designed to make this apocalyptic setting feel richer and more alive.

With this approach, the studio aims to deliver an experience that goes beyond simply moving from mission to mission, placing importance on constant thinking and adapting your playstyle as situations evolve. According to the developers, the map will respond to the player’s decisions in a more logical way, with visible and narrative consequences. “Your decisions not only shape the rise of a new civilization, but can also determine whether a fresh apocalypse can be avoided,” reads the game’s Steam page.

Although no release date has been confirmed yet, Atom RPG 2 can already be added to Steam wishlists. What seems likely, though still speculative, is that this new entry may launch in Early Access, following the model used for its predecessor. That title spent a full year in Early Access, which allowed the developers to refine its more controversial elements together with the community, so it is expected that the studio will repeat this strategy.
