The last major local stronghold has fallen – from now on, Hungary will be handled as part of a larger regional structure.
It says a lot about the state of Hungary’s video game market that by 2026, none of the industry’s major players maintain a direct local presence anymore. First Electronic Arts effectively stepped back, then Xbox followed, and in the meantime Nintendo distribution was moved under a Czech company. Now, as the final holdout in practice, PlayStation has joined the same trend.
Starting May 1, distribution of Sony consoles – along with their accessories and games – will be taken over by the Polish company Plaion. The same regional setup will also cover the Czech and Slovak markets, according to a confirmation posted on LinkedIn by the company’s head, Craig McNicol.
For the moment, it’s unclear what Hungarian customers will actually notice once the switch happens, and whether the change will have any impact on areas like localization. Will more games receive Hungarian subtitles – or fewer? Is there any chance of Hungarian dubbing returning, or is that wishful thinking? And what about community-facing plans: events, promotions, even the possible comeback of launch parties?
There are still plenty of open questions, but as soon as new information becomes available, we’ll share it with you.
