According to the Creator of God of War, Sons of Sparta Isn’t God of War! [VIDEO]

David Jaffe shared his strong opinion about the new God of War game that was announced and released last week.

Sony Santa Monica and Mega Cat Studios teamed up to create the long-awaited 2.5D game, God of War: Sons of Sparta, starring Kratos, which suddenly disappeared from the public eye. We are starting to see a lot of reactions to the game. One of them comes from Jaffe, who is best known as one of the original creators of the God of War franchise. To say that he doesn’t like the new game would be an understatement. He says that it’s not God of War and asks, “What the f*** was Sony Santa Monica thinking?” Jaffe says the game is good but too generic. He doesn’t think it’s the game God of War fans would have wanted if they had been asked about playing a 2.5D, Metroidvania-style game in Sony‘s long-running franchise.

What Jaffe Objects To In Sons of Sparta

He delves deeper into his criticisms, citing visual noise and a general lack of polish. While some may consider these issues to be minor, Jaffe believes that they are important because they are making a first-party game, and even minor issues should not be allowed. Jaffe believes players wanted something closer to Blasphemous, Ninja Gaiden, Ragebound, and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. They wanted a straightforward, extremely violent 2.5D action game in which players wouldn’t play as the younger Kratos from the prequels, but as the Spartan spirit who existed before Kratos appeared in Norse mythology.

Jaffe adds that if God of War were removed from the game – i.e., if the well-known IP were removed – and it were presented as a 2.5D action game about a young Spartan, people would not be interested. Jaffe also opposes the change in the studio’s priorities, which has resulted in a shift in focus from the action gameplay that defined the original trilogy to storytelling.

“Nobody wants to play as kids! We don’t want to play as Atreus, and we don’t want a spin-off about him either. Why do you keep making games about 15-year-old boys? Leave me alone! Go to Epstein’s Island or wherever the hell it is. I don’t know what they’re doing there, but leave me the fuck alone! I want to be Kratos! Sons of Sparta reminds me of a conversation I had with someone who used to work at Sony Santa Monica. We were talking about the sequence in God of War Ragnarök that a lot of people complain about. In it, Atreus goes on a long sled ride with the girl he likes, and it just goes on and on. I asked this person, “Why didn’t they recognize that focus tests showed this was boring? Shouldn’t they have cut or shortened it?” They said, “It’s just one person’s opinion, but I would know. I was certainly in the know.” They said, “Sony Santa Monica these days is driven mostly, or primarily, by story.” I was like, ‘Oh my god,'” Jaffe said.

Jaffe also claims that anyone who says he is bitter is wrong and that he is only talking about his dissatisfaction with Sons of the Sparta because he simply does not like the game. However, it’s difficult to take this statement seriously since Jaffe is currently a content creator, and these videos seem to be his main source of income.
