PS5 Pro’s New PSSR Update Is Here, and You Can See the Visual Jump Right Now in Resident Evil 9: Requiem

PlayStation has confirmed a new update for PS5 Pro’s PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), aiming for more detailed scenes and higher overall image quality through improved upscaling. The broader rollout arrives in the coming weeks, but PS5 Pro owners can already try it in the first game that uses it: Capcom’s Resident Evil 9: Requiem.

PlayStation had already hinted that something was coming for PSSR, and now it is official: a new version of the system is on the way, focused on refining the upscaling pipeline to deliver sharper results and more detail. While the update will roll out more broadly over the next few weeks, PS5 Pro players can see what it does right away in the first title built to take advantage of it, Resident Evil 9: Requiem.

According to PlayStation’s official blog, Sony and AMD engineers have spent the last six months collaborating on the technology under Project Amethyst, targeting an experience that combines a high frame rate with improved image quality. For now, the update is limited to Resident Evil 9: Requiem, and the rest of the lineup will have to wait until March to receive the new PSSR improvements.

From Capcom’s side, Masaru Ijuin says the team used the RE Engine to “improve the presentation quality of the protagonist”, which in turn strengthens immersion in the horror experience. He points to hair rendering as a concrete example: “each strand of hair and beard hair is rendered as a polygon, resulting in realistic reactions to body movement and wind”. He also notes that “the way light passes through hair is affected by how different strands overlap”, and frames this kind of texture-level detail as something that is traditionally hard to upscale cleanly. Capcom’s view is that PSSR helps push that expressiveness further by processing those details and texture nuances more effectively.

PSSR Will Also Be Highlighted in the March PS5 Pro Update

PlayStation says it will share more details on the new PSSR improvements at some point in March. The company also confirms that PS5 Pro technology will be featured in next month’s firmware update, including a new option that lets players select “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” in Settings, applying the upgraded PSSR improvements to any PS5 Pro title that supports the technology.

Until then, Resident Evil 9: Requiem serves as an early preview, giving players a more detailed presentation and a practical look at what PlayStation wants PSSR to become on PS5 Pro.
