Tom Cruise Reveals Why Top Gun: Maverick Took So Long

MOVIE NEWS – It’s rare for a film and its sequel – with the same lead actor – to be separated by 36 years, but that’s exactly what happened with Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick. And the main reason for that, according to Tom Cruise, was Tom Cruise.

With Top Gun’s 40th anniversary approaching, Collider recalled Cruise’s recent explanation for why a follow-up didn’t happen right after the 1986 original. “The movie was such a huge success that the studio immediately wanted to jump on making Top Gun films and churn them out – ” Cruise said. ” – But I wanted to grow in other directions, to test myself in different areas, so I could learn from new challenges.”

Those challenges kept coming, and Top Gun’s sequel fell off the agenda – only to be dusted off again in the mid-2010s.

Now, the 40-year-old Top Gun is heading back to theaters – for those who never saw it on the big screen, and for everyone who wants to relive one of the great adventures of their childhood or youth.
