Who Do We See on the Westerosi Mosaic? The Complete Family Map of Egg and Daenerys Targaryen

MOVIE NEWS – A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms introduces a host of Targaryen characters, and it is easy to get lost among the platinum-haired figures with similar names. We break down who is who and how they all connect to Daenerys.

Maekar, Aegon, Rhaenyra, Baelor, Daenerys… With so many Targaryen names and that distinctive platinum hair common to almost all of them, even the most devoted Game of Thrones fans lose track of who is who from time to time. In the latest A Song of Ice and Fire spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, numerous members of the dragon clan appear once again, which is no surprise given that one of the protagonists, Aegon (nicknamed “Egg”), belongs to the family. But who among them is Daenerys‘ ancestor?

To put all of this in context, the adventures of Dunk and Egg (beginning in year 209 AC) take place roughly at the midpoint of the Targaryen dynasty’s rule in Westeros, chronologically situated between the end of the Dance of the Dragons (the civil war depicted in House of the Dragon) and the beginning of the events of Game of Thrones. In other words, more than 80 years before King Robert Baratheon traveled North, to the misfortune of Ned Stark and his family.

Aegon V Targaryen, Known as “The Unlikely”

This means that almost all the Targaryens of that era are dead by the time the original series begins, with one exception: Maester Aemon of the Night’s Watch, who, as Game of Thrones fans will recall, is in fact Egg’s older brother, having renounced his dynastic rights. But Daenerys must be descended from one of them, and that one is Egg himself (Aegon V), who would eventually rule the Seven Kingdoms for several decades following a chain of succession twists. He was succeeded by the brief reign of his son, Jaehaerys II, who sat on the Iron Throne for just three years. After his early death, the crown passed to his son Aerys II, the “Mad King.”

This is where the circle closes with the original series: Aerys II is the father of Rhaegar, Viserys, and Daenerys Targaryen herself. The small, curious squire we meet in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is none other than the “Mother of Dragons'” great-grandfather, while Jon Snow, as Rhaegar‘s son, is her great-great-grandnephew. A direct line connecting the adventures of Dunk and Egg to the fate of Westeros. The full family relationship with Daenerys:

Maekar: great-great-grandfather / Aegon V (Egg): great-grandfather / Jaehaerys II: grandfather / Aerys II (Mad King): father / Daenerys Targaryen: the character herself / Jon Snow (Aegon): nephew

What about Baelor? In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms we already see why he never came to sit on the Iron Throne, but we also know that incestuous relationships are common among the Targaryens. Was there any crossing between Aegon and his great-granddaughter? Surprisingly, no, as Baelor‘s descendants did not have much luck. But that is another story. House of the Dragon returns in June, and that is when we will learn who the direct ancestors of young Aegon are, and therefore those of Daenerys and Jon as well.
