MOVIE NEWS – It is painful that from one of the most influential video games of all time – a franchise that has pushed the action-shooter genre to new heights of quality with each installment – such an unmemorable film emerged. But that is exactly what happened with the Doom movie adaptation, which, more than 20 years later, one of its stars, Rosamund Pike, has commented on in an interview.
To defend it? You can already imagine that is not the case. The award-winning actress recently appeared in an episode of a podcast and, in statements reported by The Independent, had no qualms about calling Doom one of the worst films in history. She said it was a failure she did not need to wait for the reaction of the specialist press – which, of course, was disastrous – to sense that the film would not receive applause. “It was a total fiasco. I mean, it probably could have ended my career, and it was probably one of the worst films ever made. I mean, it was a catastrophe. I don’t read reviews, but you’re left with this feeling that you’re lucky to have survived that.”
A Film That Clearly Wasn’t for Her
Pike recalls that it was a blockbuster full of “macho guys.” It should not be forgotten that it was one of Dwayne Johnson‘s first major projects – and the good Karl Urban, from The Boys, also appeared. “There were weights on set. Every time they pulled out a gun, it was almost like a sacred relic for the Doom fans. I was just out of my comfort zone, out of my league, completely out of my depth,” she added in the conversation.
“If I can jump over this bale of hay in my crinoline, then I can certainly go and kill a few zombies on Mars.”
And why did she take the role? “When I was filming Pride & Prejudice and having a wonderful time in my cornfields with my bonnet, I got a call to be in an action movie. They were making an adaptation of the video game and I, there with my bonnet and in my field of haybales, thought: ‘Yes, I can do anything. If I can jump over this bale of hay in my crinoline, then I can certainly go and kill a few zombies on Mars.'” She was wrong.
With a budget of 65 million dollars, Doom did not even gross 60 million, and it also received a majority failing grade on Rotten Tomatoes. Even so, it left us with a very good first-person action scene, and it can be said that it is the best Doom film ever made since in 2019 another was released with an even worse reception. Perhaps with the recent appetite of streaming services for video games, something interesting may emerge in the future.
