Several months have passed since the launch of the ROG Xbox Ally X and its smaller sibling. Although they are not perfect devices, they represent a clear evolution of the ASUS ROG Ally family, and the best part is that both ASUS and Microsoft are committed to applying improvements based on new technologies and updates. In this case we will tell you about a new feature that will arrive on the ROG Xbox Ally X next month and will benefit owners of this portable PC-console.
The new feature we are talking about is Auto SR, or Automatic Super Resolution, an AI-powered upscaling technology that will arrive in a test version on the ROG Xbox Ally X in April 2026. Microsoft promises that activating this function will mean “a nearly 30% fps boost while maintaining virtually equivalent visual quality.” The company announced it at GDC 2026, showing how frames increased in Forza Horizon 5, which went from 35 fps to 51 fps once the technology was activated.
An Important Upgrade for the ROG Xbox Ally X
It may sound familiar, but Auto SR is not a new technology in Microsoft‘s ecosystem – it was already present in Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon X or X2 processors, but its arrival on the Xbox Ally X means venturing into hardware with an AMD chip. What makes this possible is the neural processing unit (NPU) of the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip in the Ally X, one that allows upscaling to run independently of the GPU. This reduces the graphics load and notably improves battery life. It should be clarified that Auto SR operates at the operating system level and can be activated in any compatible title without additional patches, unlike technologies such as NVIDIA‘s DLSS or AMD‘s FSR. In any case, Auto SR is limited to games running under DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 and some titles could introduce certain latency, according to Tom’s Hardware. Bear in mind that this improvement is exclusive to the Ally X model, as the standard ROG Xbox Ally does not have NPU cores. If you have the ROG Ally X, you will be able to play games better from this month of April.
