Pearl Abyss Defends Crimson Desert Against Denuvo Criticism

There are only a few days left until the launch of Crimson Desert, a game that aims to surprise the entire community with its enormous number of mechanics and vast open world – larger than Red Dead Redemption 2. However, over the last few days a portion of the PC community has been somewhat disappointed, and not because of the game itself. After months of being available to purchase and pre-order, Pearl Abyss confirmed that Crimson Desert would have Denuvo, a very unpopular anti-piracy technology.

The fact that Crimson Desert has Denuvo and was only announced with such short notice has angered thousands of players, as this anti-piracy technology is popularly known for harming player performance. However, Pearl Abyss has issued a statement to journalist Paul Tassi of Forbes to calm the waters and commit to launch-day optimization.

“The benchmark videos and performance specs we published were all created with exactly the same Denuvo implementation that will be in the launch version. This includes the Digital Foundry performance videos. It is important that the experience that analysts and benchmarkers have with the game is ultimately representative of the final consumer experience,” states Pearl Abyss.

Pearl Abyss considers it vital that the experience of analysts be the same as that of end users. Additionally, the studio refers to a Digital Foundry analysis published at the end of February, where the game was running on Ultra, native 4K and operating at 60 fps with an RX 7900 XTX. We will have to wait to see what the final optimization will be like; so far, upscaling technologies have been confirmed (DLSS 4.5 with Multi Frame Gen, FSR 3 and 4) that will help players reach a higher frame rate.

What Happened with the Physical Version of Crimson Desert?

As often happens with many games of this caliber, there are players who have access to the title before launch as it goes on sale in certain stores. What we have been able to find out is that the studio has limited access to physical copies sent in advance to avoid spoilers, so they cannot be started until the moment of its launch. It has also come to light that Crimson Desert will have a day-one patch of up to 48 GB, and on consoles you will need to download it before starting the game.
