Over the past week, Fortnite has gone from announcing an adjustment to its V-Bucks to having to face a protest campaign from its most committed community. A few days ago, modifications to the V-Bucks packs were announced, set to take effect on March 19, which will reduce the amount of virtual currency received per pack, including the monthly Fortnite Crew subscription. None of this has gone down well with players, and some are even calling for a boycott.
From that date, the €8.99 pack will go from giving 1,000 V-Bucks to just 800, and the monthly Fortnite Crew subscription will also drop from 1,000 to 800 coins. The feeling many players convey is that the change comes after years in which Fortnite has run hundreds of collaborations, held massive events, and created a host of fun game modes. In the face of the boycott attempt, Epic Games has sought to calm the community, though the statements may end up angering players even further.
A Boycott of Fortnite?
Part of the community has started openly talking about boycotting the shop and battle passes to show their anger at the changes to Fortnite‘s V-Bucks packs. On social media, phrases like “You cut our V-Bucks, we cut your funding” are being shared alongside screenshots of Fortnite Crew cancellations, with players being urged not to spend another euro from March 19 onwards.
Andre Balta, Senior Director of Ecosystem Growth, explained that the cut is “in direct correlation with operating costs” and that this increase will have players “helping pay the bills” in order to keep updating the game. Balta also asserts that within the studio they “put a ton of work and care” into Fortnite‘s gameplay, and that paying those bills “frees up” teams to bring more quality content.
Ted Timmins, Design Director, followed the same line and assured everyone that “incredible things” are coming to Fortnite in the coming months, one of which is that Fortnite‘s Save the World mode will be free from April. These messages seem set to stoke the community’s anger even further, especially following the Fortnite V-Bucks price hike in 2023. In any case, Epic trusts that upcoming seasons, collaborations, and modes will justify these controversial V-Bucks changes.
