MOVIE NEWS – For quite some time now, fans have been trying to figure out why Spielberg made Disclosure Day, which, based on the trailers, appears to be about extraterrestrials visiting Earth – and perhaps having been here for a long time without that truth ever being officially revealed. More and more fans and critics now believe the film is not a standalone story at all, but a continuation of Spielberg’s 1977 sci-fi classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
The carefully staged trailers have set the internet on fire. While plot details remain tightly guarded, the visual style and overall premise feel strikingly close to Spielberg’s earlier work. Fans have spotted several visual Easter eggs in the footage that seem to directly reference the 1977 film. The glowing UFOs emerging from the clouds strongly resemble the flying saucers from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Even the strange behavior of animals has drawn attention, since in the original film their reactions were among the first signs that something otherworldly was near.
One of the most popular theories suggests that Disclosure Day takes place 49 years after that first contact, in the very same world. While the 1977 film focused on the thrill of discovery, the new movie may explore the consequences instead, depicting a world in which the government concealed the existence of aliens for decades before the truth could no longer be contained – exactly what the title seems to imply.
If it really is a sequel, it would not be an unprecedented trick. A useful comparison is M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, which only revealed at the very end that its story was taking place within the universe of Unbreakable. Fans believe Spielberg is more than capable of pulling off a similarly hidden continuation.
