MOVIE NEWS – Fans are at last getting the era they have wanted for years: Netflix and Ubisoft have officially confirmed that the live-action Assassin’s Creed series will be set during the first century of the Roman Empire, specifically in 64 AD.
After weeks of leaks and speculation, Netflix and Ubisoft have now made it official. Production has begun on the long-awaited live-action Assassin’s Creed series, and with that announcement came the detail many fans had been waiting for: the show is heading to Imperial Rome, a historical backdrop the video game franchise has never fully explored in playable form despite years of demand from its audience. The story is set in 64 AD, the year of the Great Fire of Rome. That gives the series far more than a striking visual setting. It places the narrative in one of the most volatile and dramatic moments in Roman history, a period defined by chaos, suspicion, political maneuvering, and open struggles for power. It is also the reign of Nero, which gives the writers a naturally rich foundation for conspiracy, violence, and imperial paranoia.
Official details remain limited for now, but the project is said to be an original story rather than a direct adaptation of any single game. Even so, it is expected to stay faithful to the main pillars of the franchise. That means historical intrigue, action, parkour, and a protagonist caught in the middle of a much larger conflict shaped by hidden forces and ancient secrets. The choice of Rome is especially notable because the franchise has technically visited the city before, but only through Renaissance Rome in Ezio Auditore’s storyline, not the Rome of emperors and imperial collapse. After Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, many fans expected Ubisoft to eventually tackle that era in the games, but the series moved elsewhere instead. The live-action adaptation now looks ready to step into that gap.
Earlier unconfirmed leaks suggested the story might stretch across the years 54 to 68 AD, potentially covering Nero’s rise and the darker turns of his rule. If that proves accurate, the show could also bring historical figures such as Nero himself and Seneca into the spotlight. For now, though, the confirmed setting alone is enough to make this one of the more promising Assassin’s Creed screen projects in quite a while.
