A Six-Year-Old Call of Duty Has Suddenly Come Back to Life Thanks to a Price Drop Activision Rarely Offers

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) has exploded again on PC after receiving a 90% discount on Steam, dropping to its lowest price ever.

Sometimes the best way to measure how much value an older game still has is not to study reviews or watch its long-term player count, but to slash its price hard and wait to see how the community responds. In the case of Call of Duty, that strategy seems to work extremely well. Activision has done something it does not usually do: it gave Call of Duty: Modern Warfare a massive 90% discount.

During sale periods, discounted Call of Duty games usually still hover around 20 to 30 euros, and it is rare to see them go lower than that. This time, however, the 2019 Infinity Ward reboot dropped from 59.99 euros to just 5.99 euros during the Steam Spring Sale. That was enough to give the shooter a dramatic second life, and not just in a minor way. The comeback was so strong that it even broke the game’s own previous record.

According to 3DJuegos, the shooter passed 53,000 concurrent players on Valve‘s platform, which makes this far more than a small nostalgia bump. It is also worth noting that this was not some broad, identical promotion across every storefront. Activision appears to have handled the discount selectively depending on the platform. While the game is priced at 19.79 euros on Battle.net, it is available for 6 euros on Steam. So far, neither the Xbox Store nor the PlayStation Store has received the same offer.

What makes this especially interesting is that the surge cannot be explained by price alone. Nostalgia clearly matters here too, because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare remains, for many players, one of the defining entries in the franchise over the last decade. Even with its multiplayer quirks, it is still widely seen as one of the stronger modern Call of Duty games. It is entirely possible that Activision is not just reviving an older title for a quick sales burst, but also testing how hungry the audience still is for the Modern Warfare branch of the series, especially after a Black Ops 7 that reportedly drew a lot of criticism. That is one reason why more and more people are already speculating that the next major release could end up being Modern Warfare 4.
