Bethesda Game Studios Has Learned from the DLC Pop-Up Windows in Its Previous RPGs!

Bethesda Game Studios (BGS) made an annoying mistake in its earlier games, but Todd Howard’s team corrected it over time.

When we first played Bethesda’s open-world RPGs, we received a helpful notification whenever we installed new DLC. As soon as we loaded our last save, the notification would appear and tell us how to start the mission, where to buy horse armor, and so on. However, replaying the games after the release of a guaranteed Game of the Year or Ultimate re-release was a much more disruptive experience. As soon as we stepped out of the tutorial area, we were flooded with a barrage of pop-ups.

Istvan Pely, who worked on the art for all of Bethesda’s Fallout and The Elder Scrolls games from Morrowind to Skyrim (and presumably has Hungarian ancestry, judging by his name), recently told GamesRadar that the Fallout 3 Game of the Year edition in particular taught them this isn’t the best experience. One of the things they learned over a decade ago, if we look at the Fallout 3 Game of the Year edition, is that they made these DLCs, then released the Game of the Year edition, and that edition began with a series of messages informing players that the DLCs had been unlocked. They’ve improved a lot in that regard.

Pely is currently the art director for Starfield, which is set to receive the Terran Armada story DLC next month. BGS doesn’t want to repeat this mistake with Starfield’s expansions. The beginning of Terran Armada weaves into the world much more organically. We’ll stumble upon this content by accident. It’s entirely possible that we’ll start the game, come across it, and the game will tell us that we probably shouldn’t do this right now, but nothing will stop us from trying.

Starfield will receive the Terran Armada DLC on April 7, along with the Free Lanes update that tackles loading screen issues. To be fair, we had heard about this much earlier, as the leaks were right again this time.
