It has already been two years since the game launched, and Capcom may still have plans to expand it even though its director is no longer with the company. An anniversary illustration has now sent fans straight back into speculation mode.
Over the weekend, Capcom celebrated the second anniversary of Dragon’s Dogma II with a new illustration. At first glance, fans of the action RPG were somewhat disappointed, since many were hoping for DLC or a proper expansion announcement. But after taking a closer look, it seems the Japanese developer may at least have slipped in a small tease.
The artwork shows an unknown character from behind, and, more importantly, features a letter that enterprising fans have translated using the official alphabet of Gransys, one of the regions from the first game. The message supposedly reads: “Sightings of griffins flying in from the northern region of Organ have been confirmed.” Dragon’s Dogma II itself also references a northern region, yet players never actually get to visit it in the game.
Hail, Arisen! The 2nd anniversary of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is upon us. To celebrate the milestone, we’ve prepared this special celebratory artwork.

After Dark Arisen, Another Expansion Would Not Be Unprecedented
The first Dragon’s Dogma received a substantial expansion, Dark Arisen, about a year after the base game launched, adding the endgame dungeon Bitterblack Isle along with new enemies, armor, and weapons. Development cycles have clearly become much longer since then, which could explain why an as-yet-unannounced DLC may be taking so long this time. It would make even more sense if Capcom were now preparing to add an entirely new region to Dragon’s Dogma II.
From a sales perspective, the game did well out of the gate, reaching 3 million copies within its first two months, but momentum has slowed since then. According to Capcom’s latest quarterly report, it has only just moved past 4 million copies sold, though it will probably soon overtake the original Dragon’s Dogma, which sold 4.2 million. A strong discount could be enough to push it there, since sales promotions usually give numbers a welcome boost.
The sequel was presented by series creator Hideaki Itsuno – who left Capcom shortly after the game’s release – as the full realization of Dragon’s Dogma. In practice, though, it felt more like a 1.5 than a true 2. Even so, Capcom may still end up surprising everyone.
